Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
