A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent concerns over operational security.
