Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team head to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: Spurs go to St James' Park on late October for their next round League Cup match against the Magpies.
